Project Management Certification - Who Needs It?

Being a project manager requires attention to detail and the ability to work within certain boundaries and restraints required by the client. While working as a project manager in any organization will help to refine these skills, will that in itself be enough? Many employers are looking for candidates with experience, but just as many are looking for professionals who possess a project management certification. An employer may feel more secure hiring a professional who has taken the necessary steps to obtain a certificate in their field. It also projects a person’s desire to be the best in a chosen career.

Not being certified does not mean that the perspective employee is not qualified. However, when comparing skill sets most contractors want the candidate who is accredited in their field. Having a certification may lead to more lucrative opportunities for any professional. It can give an employer the sense that this person is an expert in their chosen line of work.

There are many courses available to aid in the quest for certification. Some of the courses can be completed online while others require classroom time. The process of becoming certified requires passing exams and in some cases, hours of hands on experience. Obtaining a project management certification can increase the chance of landing that perfect job. Of course, there is a fee for the various courses, but this is an investment in future earnings.

Obtaining a certificate also shows perspective employers that you are committed to your profession and pursuing a certificate in management requires dedication and time, but in the long run it will pay off in many ways. Possessing a certification can set any professional apart from their peers who have not worked towards obtaining one. Experience is invaluabl, but it is not always the most important aspect of filling a position. Employers want to have peace of mind that the investment they are making will be a profitable relationship.

Once a certification has been secured, that should not be the end of the endeavor. Technology and other industries are always changing and the project management professional should be aware of this. Becoming re-certified in continual intervals will help to keep up with the changes that can affect the way a job is managed. Being informed of new information will portray expertise.

Do not be fooled into thinking that just because you have been in the same field for many years and have a ton of experience that it is enough for potential employers. Consider the benefits of obtaining a project management certification and then decide if that is the right direction to take. In today’s job market, the competition is fierce. Investing in the future can be very prosperous to all professionals. Becoming certified may not be for everyone, but it is something to think about when looking to change one‘s work environment and with a certification it may even level the playing field.  Better yet, it may just be the thing to pull you ahead of the pack.
