Though it is not yet widespread, some colleges and universities have begun offering project management education programs. There are also certifications available through various project management groups. Those interested in project management should conduct an online or library search in order to find the program most compatible with their needs.
The project management certification programs offer various levels of credentials, dependent on a project manager’s level of experience. The Project Management Institute’s PMP (Project Management Professional) is probably the most well-known. All told, PMI offers five credentials and a variety of ways to earn professional development units in order to maintain the certification throughout the years.
The American Management Association offers project management training courses that cover nine distinct bodies of knowledge, essential for this career field. Many other training companies offer project management education in the form of seminars, online training, self-paced electronic training, or manuals. There seems to be an educational opportunity for every potential student, no matter what his or her level of interest.
Online schools have begun to offer bachelor’s and master’s degrees in project management. Walden University offers a master’s of science degree in project management, while the University of Texas at Dallas offers the M.S. in Management and Administrative Sciences with an emphasis in project management. Villanova University is quite well known for its master certificate program in project management, drawing instructors from some of the top firms in their respective industries.
Project management education comes in many types and formats, from online to in-person, from a seminar to a master’s degree. A strong educational foundation will prepare students to plan, organize, and monitor the progress of projects within a wide variety of industries. The field of project management is growing at a rapid pace so there should be a wide selection of jobs available to all graduates.
