Despite the declining economy, the employment outlook for project management careers remains positive. It is estimated that over one million project management positions will need to be filled annually through the year 2016. In other words, project management is looking at a shortage, not an excess, of talent. This need is due to a growth in gross domestic product and a shift in the demographic of the workforce. Many countries will experience an increase in the number of workers retiring over the next forty years. In addition, the population growth rate will be slowing in many developed countries.

Goal setting and attainment are the key responsibilities of any project management job. The project manager plans, organizes, and monitors how and when these goals are met. While a business manager has responsibility for a functional area, a project manager oversees all areas of a specific project.

Project managers are needed in various industries in order to improve business performance. This actually causes the position to fair much better than jobs that are specific to one or several industries. The growth in industries such as healthcare and green technology has offset the shrinking financial services and automotive industries.

Industries such as engineering, construction, architecture, real estate development, and manufacturing have urgent needs for project managers. These professionals also play key roles in the pharmaceutical and high tech industries, where they are charged with product or technology development and launch.  Insurance companies and banks hire project managers to help roll out new practices or standards company-wide.

Whether small or large, most organizations have a need for a project manager, whether they have already realized it or not. Project management careers are expected to experience healthy growth in the near future. This occupation provides its incumbent with a great sense of ownership, management, and accountability.
